One reason it is important to continually monitor One reason it is important to continually monitor wetland mitigation sites is that hydrologic changes can occur unexpectedly. At the site pictured here, water levels dropped suddenly, likely the result of the failure of a beaver dam downstream of the mitigation site. You can see by the marks on the vegetation that the water level was approximately 1.5 feet higher before this photograph was taken. Establishing and maintaining consistent hydrologic regimes is an important component to successful mitigation. Collecting regular site data will help to make any necessary changes to meet the performance goals of the mitigation site.
