This photo illustrates the importance of controlling for invasive plants. In the area pictured, an understory of reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea) has established under a relatively young community of willows. The aggressive growing characteristics of reed canarygrass allow it to leaf out sooner than the other plant species in this area, giving it a competitive advantage against other native plant species. It can be very difficult to re-establish a native plant community once these invasive plants become established. Using preventative measures at the first sign of these species can save a lot of time and money in the long run.

Raedeke Associates biologists have conducted a number of Marbled Murrelet habitat assessments this spring while observing social distancing requirements. Trees suitable as Marbled Murrelet habitat are at least 32 inches in diameter and have platforms formed by features such as mossy branches or mistletoe blooms high up the trees to support these elusive birds' nests.
